Intermediate Public Speaking (ages 9 to 10)
What do we learn in Intermediate Public Speaking?
The following learning goals are specific to the Intermediate Public Speaking course in addition to the overall learning goals.
Topic Analysis and Speech Preparation
In the Intermediate Public Speaking course, students will deepen their understanding of topic analysis, learning to develop clear and compelling theses for their speeches. They will explore different organizational styles and patterns, such as comparison/contrast, categorical, spatial, chronological, biographical, cause and effect, problem-cause-solution, and psychological, to structure their speeches effectively. The course will emphasize the SMART method for speech preparation, ensuring that students' speeches are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Attention-getting strategies will also be covered, teaching students how to captivate their audience from the start.
Building Confidence and Adaptability
The course will provide ample opportunities for students to practice overcoming fear and building confidence in front of a crowd. They will learn to think on their feet, adapting their speeches in the moment to maintain audience engagement. Students will also work on developing their personality and persuasiveness, becoming more confident and compelling speakers.
Vocal and Non-Verbal Delivery
Students will refine their vocal delivery skills, focusing on tone, volume, articulation, pauses, and word stress to enhance their speeches. The course will also cover the use of body language and other non-verbal communication techniques, helping students convey confidence and clarity. Developing a strong and purpose statement while speaking will be emphasized, ensuring students' messages are impactful and persuasive.
Critical Thinking and Effective Listening
Critical thinking will be a key component, enabling students to analyze and evaluate their own speeches as well as those of others. Effective listening skills will be honed, promoting active engagement with the audience. Students will practice paraphrasing, summarizing key points succinctly and avoiding unnecessary blabbering. The use of visual aids, such as slideshows and images, will be integrated to enhance the clarity and impact of their presentations.
